Gettin' My Work Done For Me!

Why work when you can get someone else to do it for you! Right, The Other UNH Hockey Blogger Guy (btw - Happy Belated Birthday)! I really need to get some OTHER UNH Hockey Blogger Guys and Gals.

Anyhow, my thanks goes out to Doyle Woody, the Anchorage, Alaska sports guy for the title-linked article about Ty Conklin. Ty is finally back in shape and proving that he's still got it - check out the article. Also there is this rather pathetic article totally downplaying Ty's role and even questioning his abilities - I much prefer Doyle's analysis.

I'll try to get Ty's and Jeff Pietrasiak's stats up sometime soon and last I heard Mike Ayers is in Europe (Denmark I think).

Too Good To Pass Up

I know I've said I will stick to UNH Hockey here but I hope you will forgive me this one transgression in the title-linked news article.

I saw the program where the incident took place and I think that the hockey community as a whole is a better place for this spectacle.

HHM

Hokey Hockey Monday is more like it but a win IS a win and I'll take it.

I got to play a little hockey this morning. Gotta love that. There weren't enough shooters nor an opposing goaltender so it was just me on the receiving end of A LOT OF SHOTS. Felt good today and I stopped a lot of shots - which isn't always the case, some days when you're off, you're OFF! But today was not that day.

I'm hoping Coach will let me come to practice and TRY to stop some pucks some time. What do you say Coach?

Well, the polls finally catch up to reality - the pairwise rankings. I've already displayed my disdain for polls so that's all I'm going to say about that - not that I don't respect your opinion Coach but the polls only amount to some news stories on the local news.

I've updated a lot of stats recently. They're worth checking out as many of the Future 'Cats continue to put up amazing numbers as well as the Alumni. Speaking of which Jason Krog and Mark Mowers are on the ice tonight but on opposite sides of the ice as the Rangers face the Bruins - hopefully they'll give me some stats to update. And Darren Haydar is on the ice for the Canadian AHL All-Star Team - DUH!

Have a good night and check back frequently during the week for updates!

Not that it will be possible for Jacob to participate but we gotta show up!

*I feel the need to point out for those that might misunderstand that Jacob will be with the rest of the team in the Frozen Four which I'm pretty sure prohibits you from participating - so...*

Vote for Jacob...anyhow!

Ugly hockey! What are we? vermont? well, our 4 man trap is better than theirs but this is just ugly hockey. We're just waiting to give up the tying goal. It's easy to see why we lost to umass. UGLY! This is not UNH Hockey!

UNH News

Let's start with some future 'Cats.

USHL All-Stars!

Phil DeSimone (Sioux City) and Blake Kessel (Waterloo) have made their respective All-Star Teams. They are '07 and '08 recruits respectively and you can see their stats down in the Future 'Cats section.

Mike Sislo (Green Bay), '07, gets a glowing report from his coach and UNH assistant coach, Scott Borek. His coach had this to say as reported by USHR.

”He’s an unbelievable young man,” Gamblers head coach Mark Mazzoleni said. “(UNH assistant coach) Scott Borek said he was one of the most impressive young men they’ve had visit there in a long time.”

“On the ice, he’s really blossomed this year,” Mazzoleni added. “He’s a tremendous skater. He feels and understands the game well. And he shoots like an NHLer. From mid-November to now he’s really come on. UNH covers our league so well, and they just jumped on him. He’s great for that program. They like the skating game – and he can finish. I think UNH got a high-end player.”

I think they will need to teach him to play better on the defensive side of the puck once he arrives in order to improve his unimpressive -11 rating - it sounds like he will be very receptive and should turn out to be a quite respectable player.

Alumni News:

Sean Collins continues to play with Josh Prudden and Garrett Stafford for the Worcester Sharks. Look for them to contribute more and more to Worcester's success.

Jason Krog, now playing for the NY Rangers, proves the move was a good one. He scored the game-winning goal in the third period today to lift the Rangers to a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers.

And, Darren Haydar, continues his tirade against the AHL now having posted 88 points, four off of last year's 80 game total, in just 48 games.

Justin Aikins' stats have been added to the pros list - he continues to be a consistent, near-point per game producer with the ECHL's Phoenix Roadrunners.

UNH Men's Hockey Blog Poll Results!

My belief in Wildcat Nation is well placed!

With a slightly less-than-respectable turnout of 40 people the poll finished with these results...

Undefeated (didn't happen, but it still could!) - 29 Votes

PS3 - 2 votes

360 - 1 vote

World Peace - 8 votes

In a show of unmatched class, World Peace pulled in 20% of the votes and of course, Undefeated pulled in almost THREE-QUARTERS of the vote.

The 3 votes for material objects reflect the number of black bear fans that figured-out how to use the internet even though they could not read, therefore those votes - we all know that if they COULD read that they would have voted for our 'Cats going undefeated having the error of their ways shown to them and would have joined Wildcat Nation!

Come on! Is it game time yet!? Maine Sucks!!!

SHOUTOUT! *New Bit*

This is a shoutout (no not a shootout, though I gladly look forward to the fact that we'll be seeing them sooner than later!) to Brett and all the members of Wildcat Nation out there!

Welcome Brett! What's your connection to the 'Cats? (email me at the worded-out email in the title box - for that matter I welcome any emails from the members of Wildcat Nation!)

So, Brett shows us how it's done on the Wildcat Nation Frappr Map!

I also want to recognize Savo and Jamie, two former great 'Cats that have showed up to continue their support of our 'Cats!

To Dan in Bellingham and Dave in Cypress and of course the Gibber in good ole New Hampshire!

And last but not least unhmom! Without whom the UNH Hockey Blog would not be possible!

*Just want to point out that members who submit a name with their Frappr Map Tag seem to stay on the map - I'm still waiting for Frappr to increase their tag allowance, perhaps the members of Wildcat Nation could contact them for me en-masse!*

So, looking forward to Saturday Night's Game! Providence at home (the game will be on the fantastic NHPTV! Which also means, WEBCAST, for those of you too far to get the signal - just look to the NHPTV links to the right and don't forget to 'pay for your admission' by donating to NHPTV and mentioning UNH Hockey). It's time to re-establish our utter dominance of the opposition at both ends of the ice.

Poll Schmoll

These polls, polls, polls!

Well, ya know what Ricky Bobby says, "If you ain't first you're last!"

Well you know what I say, who cares. The tournament is not picked based on polls so that can't be it and so that leads us to ask, just what is a poll?

According to Merriam Webster's COLLEGIATE Dictionary, Tenth Edition, (I wanna say thanks to Holy Cross for this gift that keeps giving as the recipient of the Holy Cross Book Prize, I'm forever greatful!) - no it's not that thing the attractive young ladies at your local gentleman's club use to help display their prowess, that's p-o-l-e, no, it's the broad or flat end of a striking tool, nah that's not it, ah ha, here we go, the casting or recording of the votes of a body of persons. So THAT explains it. No wonder I don't like the thing! Look were the casting of votes has got us! So, we all anxiously await someone's opinion of how college hockey teams stack up when the selection committee could care less. How 'bout we just keep a running tally such as the pairwise and or KRACH and talk about that on a weekly basis, say, Monday? OK. (By the way, our 'Cats are number one in the pairwise and that is the criteria by which the committee makes the tournament placements! But I prefer the KRACH in which we are third although I'd argue with anyone as to the disparity in our SOS as compared to st. bob or the guilded dirt-eaters)

Anyhow, this still has me wondering where all these polls find varying opinions of people related to hockey in order to justify their existence. Oh well.

Hey everyone the polls are out, hide your children!

I just want to see our 'Cats win a whole bunch more hockey games and shut-up the illegitimate chatter-boxes that say UNH will choke in the playoffs. And just to shut them up right now I'll say that from year to year a college hockey team changes so much, over 4 years entirely, that looking at history to judge playoff hockey is so illegitimate as to be calling the earth flat based on historical view-points.

Let's play hockey! Let's show everyone that we can win every game and any game. I think that the umass game illustrates an excellent point. We need to find a way to win ANY game. They came out and played an excellent game but I think that we could have found an answer and I think that we need to find an answer in every game from here on out as this is the only way that we can take a National Title. We need to put it all together and no matter how we or the other teams are playing just find or even create a way to win. It's time to leave it all on the ice. If we do, we'll finish this season as the last team on the ice at the end of the Frozen Four.

One is Not Enough

Josh Prudden got a taste for goal scoring last night it seems. He picked up his second goal in as many nights, this time his goal stood as the game winner over Lowell.

I'll be updating this post with some Alumni news as it comes in tonight.

*Darren Haydar hits the magic number, 85 points, with a goal tonight.*

Go 'Cats!

The Answer Lies In The Future

You win some, you lose some, (well actually we've won a lot!) the key is to always look forward to the future and never stop fighting.

And speaking of the future I've been looking at our Future 'Cats this morning. Will O'Neill took matters into his own hands last night and scored two in a 3-2 win for his Lancers against fellow recruit Blake Kessel and the Waterloo Blackhawks. In a kind of "wish that had happened for our 'Cats" irony, Will's two goals bracketed a three goal third period for his team after they had gone down 2-0 after two periods.

Phil DeSimone and Mike Beck's Sioux City Musketeers dropped a back and forth contest with the Indiana Ice last night. Phil assisted on an early powerplay equalizer and scored midway through the third to tie the game again, the third such for their team, but the Ice propped themselves up on their fourth go-ahead goal of the game and took the 'W'.

Paul Thompson added to his EJHL league-leading point totals having now amassed 62 points in 33 games with 34 goals and 28 assists.

Alumni:

Josh Prudden got his first AHL goal this season last night and Darren Haydar added a couple points to his horde currently at 84 points with 27 goals and 57 assists in 45 games.

Looking Ahead:

Providence is coming to town on Saturday in the first NHPTV matchup of the new year. Remember that these games are webcasted so go out to your local wifi hotspot if you don't have broadband and catch the game. You can check out NHPTV and donate through the permanent link to the right - you can also watch archived games! NHPTV is the best so don't forget to support UNH Hockey by donating as much and as often as you can! Don't forget to mention UNH Hockey when you do!

I'm hoping to find out if Jacob McFlickier will be back in the line-up tonight and I'll report to you as soon as I find out.

Sislo, 5'10" 171 lbs., born 1-20-88 in Superior, WI shoots left and has 16 goals and 9 assists in 31 games this season with the Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL. It looks as if he'll join the team this fall.

Go 'Cats!

Getting It Straight

Still working on getting the details of Future 'Cat, Blake Kessel's, arrival in Durham. It looks that Kessel will be among the '08! recruiting class. I guess we'll have to wait and see. Whatever the date we'll track his progress and look forward to him donning the Blue and White.

In other matters, I don't think I've missed any birthdays but just incase a belated Happy Birthday to blueliners Chris Murray and Nick Krates! I'm pretty sure that I already mentioned their birthdays but I wouldn't want you guys to feel slighted! Coming up next are, well we have a whole slew of February birthdays which we'll get to as they come!

For those that haven't heard, Jacob McFlickier, will be sidelined tonight and possibly tomorrow night with what is being called a shoulder strain. I just hope that the minutemen think that they just may have an advantage tonight with Radja and McFlickier out of the line-up - oh how sad they'll be to learn the truth! And to learn the truth in front of the NESN cameras, oh how sweet, as the game will be televised as NESN's Friday Night College Hockey game. You can also see highlights from NESN's Friday Night Hockey on the Hockey East Online site, yes I've just named it but I refuse to reestablish their link until they show some consistent honesty with their weekly and monthly player awards.

New Recruit!

WOOHOO!

Blake Kessel chooses UNH! I'm a couple days late but perusing good ol' CH's page (that's Chris Heisenberg's Page) I see that Blake Kessel has committed to UNH on January 16th!

I'll be adding his stats shortly - and nothing short about Blake, at 6'2" he will actually raise the average incoming height just a bit over 6'! (Nothing against the little guys that play big - nothin' but love for ya! Savi, man, you'll be my favorite player for a long time! I would love to see anyone that plays with heart like that suit up in the Blue and White any day!)

Putting It All Together = REVENGE!

This team has come a long way since the early games of this season. We've buckled down defensively and found an unrivaled scoring touch. Every game I see our 'Cats moving closer and closer to the essence of the mantra.

Tomorrow night we have a chance to notch yet another step in our march toward ultimate victory. Tomorrow night, Wildcat Nation, will have the chance to savor the sweet taste of revenge.

Future 'Cats

You can see that I've nicely compiled the stats and info for our Future 'Cats in the 'stats and stuff' column (you didn't? scroll down!).

Our recruits have been doing fantastic for themselves. Paul Thompson still leads the EJHL with 57 points in 31 games and teammate Greg Burke continues to pad his stats with 5 goals and 7 assists in 23 games after having a slow start. I want to take a moment to encourage Matthew Germain to contact the UNH coaching staff or vice versa if that's 'legal'. Being a teammate of Paul Thompson and Greg Burke I think he would bring automatic chemistry with those two and he seems to possess good chemistry with the rest of his current team. Trailing Paul Thompson by just 7 points with 15 goals and 35 assists he will become a welcome addition to any D-I program.

The recruiting class coming this fall has been doing equally well. The latest addition, Mike Beck, is putting up very good numbers and has a +18. Our other blue-liner, Will O'Neill, has 6 points in 28 contests and a +2 with the last place Omaha Lancers. Mike Borisenok has 5g, 6a in 30 games with the Green Bay Gamblers who are having a rough year as well. James vanReimsdyk and Phil DeSimone continue to pick apart other teams with both averaging nearly a point and a half per game.

So, check out our recruits' stats and if you find some playing near where you live get out there a catch a game and be sure to wear your Blue and White!

I swear I'll start getting Happy Hockey Monday back on track, one of these Mondays. Anyhow, hopefully most people had today off so tomorrow can be 'Monday'!

Well, we'll take the win. We dominated the 'puke green' in every way but the shots column so I'll stay happy with that and especially happy with Kevin Regan's play except for that first goal where we both know that he could have gotten there without that hesitation but hey, who cares! Kevin, just keep up that Tom Brady attitude - it serves you well!

I'm nominating Kevin Regan for Player of the Month! (what month? who cares!) Keep up the good work!

The rankings? They deserve spankings! So, if we spank our opponents as we have been then we'll spank the rank-ings! With umass coming up this weekend and our first home game in a while I'm looking forward to a double-helping of a freezing cold dish of revenge!

Check out all the stats! You won't find a more comprehensive list of current, past and future 'Cats anywhere. But I couldn't do it without help! Congrats!

Congratulations to Coach Lassonde, winner of this year's Terry Flanagan Award, Terry Flanagan, a former Wildcat player himself! Terry played from 75/76 to finishing his senior year, 78/79, with 20 goals and 25 assists that year giving him 90 career points in 100 games. He played on UNH teams consisting of such notables as Bob Miller, Ralph Cox, John Fontas, Dave Lumley, Frank Roy (Berlin, New Hampshire Native!), Rod Langway, Bob Gould, Bruce Crowder, Bob Francis, Cliff Cox, Jamie Hislop (Hey dude!), Gary Burns (scored 137 pts in 69 AHL games)! Whew!

Congrats Coach Lassonde!

UNH Hockey Coverage

You won't find better UNH Hockey Coverage than right here at your UNH Men's Hockey Blog but everyone needs a hand and the more coverage the better if you ask me. I want to give props to WMUR News Channel 9 for their 11 o'clock sports coverage of UNH Hockey, they reported on the national rankings and then they brought a camera to practice and interviewed the King of Hockey East (who has been recognized once again by the site that must not be named), Trevor Smith.

One thing that bothers me though is the lack of a UNH Hockey Link on their sports page even though they have links to other UNH Sports. So, I turn the issue over to you, the members of Wildcat Nation, the Best Fans in College Hockey and the largest, most dedicated fan base of any sport in New Hampshire. I emailed them about the issue and received a response that they would seek to correct this glaring omission but I've seen no action. Let's let them hear the combined voice of Wildcat Nation. Congratulate them on their coverage (after all our game versus Dartmouth is being televised on WMUR on Saturday night a 7:00) and let them know that we think they can do more and do it even better.

WELL!

HAPPY HOCKEY MONDAY!

Luckily I can still type for this Happy Hockey Monday. I'm sorry this is being posted so late but I got out to play some hockey this morning and had some doctor's appointments later that are totally unrelated luckily. Anyhow, said hockey playing and stopping some rubber nearly cost me my typing as I took a near 100 mph shot on the blocker this morning and I can still feel where it made my blocker seem oh-so-ineffective.

Anyhow, on to the 'Cats. Alan Thompson wasn't there this morning as he has reported back to the team, and to the best of my knowledge has been cleared for at least partial practices with the team.

How 'bout them 'Cats!? I guess the coaches don't like the KRACH rankings but how 'bout that PUCK ranking from the College Hockey News Blog. The coaches were perhaps ratcheting up the stakes for the upcoming UNH-TeamThatMustNotBeNamed series seeing how we pounded the unholy crap out of them in their own building. Bring it on!

Anyhow, a couple nice wins in the 'gutter' to send us into the RiverStone Cup. Guys, let's take this seriously this year. We don't need to give up 9 goals to Dartmouth ever again, or for that matter 4 goals is too much. Let's show everyone where the men play hockey in New Hampshire as opposed to mere boys.

Well, time for dinner. Hope everyone in Wildcat Nation is doing well - make sure you scope-out the new Future Cats section under the Pros section. There's a chance I'll be back a little later if I can dig-up some more news.

Irony

I actually drove in the total opposite direction of the "gutter" that they call an ice rink in vermont in order to see the game, on TV - and I'm glad to have watched it.

I didn't really expect another blow-out tonight although it would have been twice as nice but I'll take two good wins over vermont any day and make that three on the season.

Hats off to Kevin Regan - you looked fantastic in nets these past two games - two well-deserved wins.

Trevor Smith, you have proven once again to be the King of Hockey East. And Chris Murray - you redeemed yourself.

Alumni:

As of now, the streak is still alive. Darren Haydar has now amassed 24 goals and 55 assists for 79 points in 39 games.

More Of The Same

Sounds so boring, but it was so exciting to watch.

I want to give a shout-out to Shawn Vinz - the straw that broke the vermont elephant's back. Well on his way to my prediction of 6 goals and 7 assists on the season. And I'm going to extend this shout-out to the entire team for stepping-up to the challenge especially in the absence of Mike Radja - last night you showed the nation and THE NATION, WILDCAT NATION, that you have more in you than anyone thought. Especially our captain, JOSH CIOCCO - WILDCAT NATION LOVES YOU MAN!

So, how 'bout it? More of the same!?

Wildcats 8, and as the hosers say, Cata-frauds 3!

Alumni:

Colin Hemingway has gone across the pond after scoring 23 points in 23 games with the Pensacola Ice Pilots of the ECHL. This move will put him closer to other 'Cats - Tyson Teplitsky, Lanny Gare, Preston Callander, Steve Saviano, Eric Nickulas, Derek Bekar and Mike Souza.

Darren Haydar continues his utter domination of the AHL. His scoring streak has now extended to 38 games and 78 points. At this pace he should reach his last season's point total in the next 7 games. That would leave 35 more games to play this season to best last year's point totals for which he is on pace for 164 points.

I'll try to update the 'Cats in the pros stats soon.

Recruits:

James vanRiemsdyk has completed his tour of duty with the bronze metal US World Junior team. I haven't found a stats page yet but I know that he accounted for at least one goal during the tournament.

The Future Cats in the USHL are continuing to inflate their point totals along with the new addition, Mike Beck. Look for a new recruit section tracking recruit point totals soon - yeah, more work for The UNH Men's Hockey Blogger Guy - isn't there anyone out there that wants to help out!?

Our Future Cats in the EJHL are just about to kick into high gear down the back-stretch of their season.

Tonight:

Recap - 8-3 Wildcats!

More of the same!

Remember the mantra!

This is my mantra!

I want game-in, game-out domination! I want the net bricked-in! I WANT BUCKETS OF FIRST PERIOD GOALS as well as second and third!

Keep your noses to the grindstone! Bury every puck in the back of the opposition's net and plow under anyone who gets in your way!

And for the love of a National Championship, STAY OUT OF THE PENALTY BOX!

*New Prediction Update!*

I reserve the right to adjust my prediction.

UNH 9-2!

Go 'Cats!

More Of The Same

I want to see more of the same versus vermont tonight and then some.

First time around, we took our time generating some offense - I'd like to see a more potent offense throughout the game.

5-2 Wildcats!

This is my mantra!

I want game-in, game-out domination! I want the net bricked-in! I WANT BUCKETS OF FIRST PERIOD GOALS as well as second and third!

New Recruit - Finally Some News!

Finally some news!

Welcome Mike Beck! All the way from Long Beach, CA and recently of the Sioux City Musketeers.

A big defenseman who has put his time in the USHL putting up almost 30 points last year and looking like he'll best it this year. Beck brings the '07 recruits' average height to 5.999925 feet, we'll call it 6 feet - and that's with Mike "Hey! I Play Big!" Borisenok at 5'8".

Thanks to Chris "You Want Recruits? I Got Recruits!" Heisenberg's incredible work on NCAA recruits and of course the title linked page for our very own UNH Wildcats.

Alive And Well

Darren "I'm Not Done Yet" Haydar keeps his streak alive and well at 37 games bringing his totals to 24 goals (two tonight) and 53 assists. 77 points in those 37 games - heck that's better than you did back here at good ol' UNH. Atlanta Thrashers? More like Atlanta Fools. I've been looking at a highway map and the distance between here and Chicago is looking shorter and shorter.

Bronze

Team USA has been defeated by Canada in a shootout that went through 14 rounds.

The team now has a chance at bronze, or going home empty-handed.

Good Luck USA!
