"UNH Commit Lucas Herrmann: A Hard-Working, Gritty Forward"

Interview

I had an opportunity to interview Lucas Herrmann at the UNH Hockey Media Day on September 25th.

Mike Lowry ("C-H-C"): What would you like UNH fans to know about you, both as a person and a hockey player?

Lucas Herrmann: As a player, I like to play hard and fast and do everything I can do to help the team win. As a person, I like being pretty laid back but once the game starts, I change a little bit.

Mike Lowry: In your games that I've watched online, it's clear you don't mind mixing it up in the offensive zone. Is that an aspect of your game that you enjoy and are good at?

Lucas Herrmann: Ya, for sure. I definitely try to get under the other team's skin. I like what I do because it gets me going as well. I think I do a decent job with that.

Lowry: Do you see yourself as similar to any of the upperclass forwards on the team in terms of style and skill set?

Lucas Herrmann: I'd say I play like (Eric) MacAdams. He covers the puck, always protects it well. He drives to the net and always plays hard. He plays with an edge and mixes it up. I think we're real similar. He's been definitely helping me. All the guys have. They've been awesome.

Neutral Zone Scouting Reports

From the NAHL Showcase, October, 2017
"Hermann had a level of snarl that at times helped him and at times did not. He walked the line for sure. The 2000 was not intimidated by older players. He was not huge or heavy but very strong and skated well. He worked and finished his checks. He was thrown out of one game for a hit from behind, which resulted in limited viewing. He had some nice tools, soft hands and is a solid prospect."
From Lawrenceville Holiday Tournament, January, 2017
"He is not pretty but gets the job done. Lucas is an average skater with a good shot that he can get off in a crowd. He had a dynamite weekend and was one of the top scorers through hard work and grit. The work ethic is high end and he goes to all the right places and does all the little things to help his team win. A really solid 200ft player who gets in on the forecheck and takes the body, plays a pretty direct game and drives the net."

"UNH Commit Kalle Eriksson: A Puck Moving Defenseman"

Interview

I had an opportunity to interview Kalle Eriksson at the UNH Hockey Media Day on September 25th.

Mike Lowry ("C-H-C"): What would you like UNH fans to know about you, both as a person and a hockey player?

Kalle Eriksson: That's a great question. On the ice, I'm a puck moving defenseman. I like to skate a lot. I try to create plays and work hard out there.

Mike Lowry: How about your personality, both on and off the ice? Do you show your emotions, are you flashy or are you more low-key?

Kalle Eriksson: Not too much, I'm not an emotional player. As a person, I'm kind of laid back. Off the ice, when I'm back in Sweden, I like fishing and hanging out with friends.

Lowry: Have you been able to try out the fishing in New Hampshire yet?

Eriksson: Not yet but I can't wait til after the season.

Lowry: Deep sea or fresh water?

Eriksson: Fresh water. I live on a lake.

Lowry: Do you see yourself as similar to any of the upperclass defensemen on the team in terms of style and skill set?

Eriksson: Maybe Matt Dawson. We're both small, lefty defensemen. We like to play with possession and make good passing plays.

Lowry: In the USHL, you played a lot on the power play. What makes you good on the power play as a defenseman?

Eriksson: I've always liked the offensive side of the game. Growing up, I played a lot of pond hockey and on the street. It's all about scoring goals and making nice plays.

Lowry: Did you ever consider playing forward?

Eriksson: Actually my Dad was a forward (Niklas Eriksson). Growing up, I played forward for the most part, until it came to the point I just tried out playing defense. Then, when I wanted to switch back, my coach wouldn't allow me to (chuckles). So, I just try to create offense on the blue line, as much as I can.

Lowry: What do you like about playing defenseman, as opposed to forward?

Eriksson: Hockey is more a tactical game. As a defenseman, you have to see the ice in a different way and try to out-think your opponent, and make good plays. I like that part of the game.

The UNH Men's Hockey Blog

News & Notes

United States Hockey League:

~ 19-year-old Timo Bakos (DOB: 7-20-2000) from Augsburg, Germany verbally committed to UNH on September 28th. So far this seson, the 6'2", 174 lbs. left-shot center has scored 2 goals and an assist in 6 games with the Sioux Falls Stampede. Last season, Bakos scored 28 goals, 31 assists in 37 games for the Augsburger U20 team. Bakos is projected to enroll at UNH in Fall 2021.

~ Four UNH Commits made the jump from midget or prep school hockey to the USHL, the only Tier 1 junior hockey league in the United States - forwards Robert Cronin (Dubuque Fighting Saints), Liam Devlin (Chicago Steel), and Will Margel (Madison Capitols), and defenseman Alex Gagne (Cedar Rapids RoughRiders).

~ 2020 or '21 UNH Commit Alex Gagne is a legitimate NHL Prospect. Former NHL defenseman Ian Morin, the Director of Neutral Zone's NHL Draft coverage, evaluated Gagne at the beginning of the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders' season. He projected Gagne as a late third round selection in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft next June. Steve Kournianos of the Draft Analyst and contributor for the Sporting News ranked Gagne #108 in his 2020 Preliminary Rankings. Surprisingly, the National Hockey League Central Scouting Service did not include Gagne in their October Players to Watch list. Gagne has tallied one assist in 5 USHL games and has a +/- rating of zero.

~ 2020 UNH Commit Will Margel scored his first USHL goal in his fifth game of the season with the Madison Capitals. 2020 or '21 Commit Liam Devlin scored his first in the sixth game with the Chicago Steel.

British Columbia Hockey League:

~ Over his last 4 games with the Wenatchee Wild, 2020 or '21 UNH Commit Nick Cafarelli has scored 2 goals and 2 assists. Overall, he has 8 goals, 7 assists in 15 games. Cafarelli is tied for 3rd in BCHL goal-scoring and tied for 10th in scoring.

~ 17-year-old Nicolas Ardanaz, a mobile, offensive defenseman, scored a goal and an assist for the West Kelowna Warriors on October 19th. He was awarded the 2nd star of the game. Ardanaz is projected to enroll at UNH in either the Fall of 2020 or 2021.

~ 2020 UNH Commit Connor Sweeney scored his first goal of the season in his 14th BCHL game. Over his first 17 games, Sweeney has distributed 4 assists.

Alberta Junior Hockey League:

~ 18-year-old center Aidan Curran began the 2019-20 regular season with the Salmon Arm Silverbacks in the BCHL. He tallied a goal and 4 assists in 11 games. On October 18th, Salmon Arm transferred his CJHL playing rights to the Bonnyville Pontiacs in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. In 2 games with Bonnyville, Curran has been the starting center and has distributed 1 assist. He is projected to enroll at UNH next Fall.

Minnesota High School Hockey:

~ 2020 or '21 UNH Commit Carsen Richels has played the fall season with the MPLS St. Paul Magazine team in the Upper Midwest High School Elite Hockey League. The 6'2", 200 lbs. winger scored 6 goals and 9 assists in 13 games. The UPMHSEHL Playoffs begin today and Richels' team is seeded #3. The NHL Central Scouting Service has rated Carsen Richels a 'B' Prospect in their October "Players to Watch" list. They've determined he is a candidate to be selected in the 2nd or 3rd Round of the 2020 NHL Draft. Richels is a senior at Blaine High School.

New England Prep School Hockey:

~ In preparation for the 2019-2020 New England Prep season, which begins in late November, David Sacco has been playing for the Cape Cod Whalers U18 split-season team. In 7 Eastern Hockey Federation Selects games, Sacco has scored 5 goals and 1 assist. The NHL Central Scouting Service has rated David Sacco a 'C' Prospect in their October "Players to Watch" list. He is a candidate to be selected in the 4th, 5th or 6th Round of the 2020 NHL Draft. Sacco is a senior at Lawrence Academy in Groton, Massachusetts.

~ 2021 or '22 UNH Commits JP Turner and Morgan Winters have played the fall season in the Beast Series games. Turner has scored 3 goals and 7 assists in 7 games with the Neponset Valley River Rats U16 team. Winters has posted a goal and an assist in 7 games with the Neponset Valley River Rats U18 team. Both will compete in the Beast Series Playoffs this weekend. JP Turner is a junior at Avon Old Farms and Morgan Winters is a junior at Tabor Academy.

Interview

I had an opportunity to interview Nolan McElhaney at the UNH Hockey Media Day on September 25th.

Mike Lowry ("C-H-C"): What would you like UNH fans to know about you, both as a person and a hockey player?

Nolan McElhaney: On the ice, I think I'm an offensive minded defenseman. I like to push the pace playing with the puck on my stick and jumping into the play as much as possible - to create offense and help to score. Defensively, I like to shut down the top lines. I like playing against the best players on the other team to help us win games.

I would call myself a quiet guy in the locker room. But if I need to be, I can be a talkative guy. I like to make sure that everyone knows what they're doing on the ice before the game starts. On the ice, I like to lead by example and do whatever I need to do to help the team win and hopefully, everyone else will figure that out.

Mike Lowry: Do you see yourself as similar to any of the upperclass defensemen on the team in terms of style and skill set?

Nolan McElhaney: I think I'm similar to Benton Maass. I try to imitate how he plays. He's been teaching me a lot over the past month, giving me a lot of pointers. He's drafted in the NHL and he'll be there soon and hopefully I'll follow not far behind. I'm trying to get as much from him now and implement that into my game as much as I can.

Lowry: Can you give an example of one of the things he's conveyed to you that's been helpful?

McElhaney: Like in 2-on-1 situations, good sticks like jumping at the guy and then back and then staying in the middle. He's a good stick in the defensive zone. He knows where he needs to be and where his stick placement is. On the blueline, he knows how to walk the puck along the blueline very well. He's been teaching me how to do that and it's coming along real well.

Winter 2017 Highlight Reel

Neutral Zone Scouting Report

Battle of Boston, May, 2018
"Nolan had a breakout year at Cushing this year and his development hasn’t slowed. He is an offensive defensemen and is constantly looking to activate into the offensive rush. He is long and lean and will need to continue to develop strength so that he is tougher to play against in his own zone. He sees the ice well and is at his best with the puck on his stick through the neutral zone. Heavy shot from the point. Sees shooting angles well."

Interview

I had an opportunity to interview Chase Stevenson at the UNH Hockey Media Day on September 25th.

Mike Lowry ("C-H-C"): What would you like UNH fans to know about you, both as a person and a hockey player?

Chase Stevenson: As a person, I'm super passionate. I think, hopefully, they'll notice, on and off the ice, that I'm a hard worker. I'm here to take school very seriously and, obviously, hockey is my main passion so I'm here to make the NHL.

Some things I enjoy off the ice - I'm a big surfer. I love surfing so at home, I'm a big surfer in the summer. I love doing all types of sports. I play a little soccer in the offseason and fun things like tennis.

On the ice, in terms of things I'd like fans to know about me, I want to be an exciting player. Somebody who plays with a lot of skill, a lot of pace, somebody that's fun to watch. I take pride in that and I'm excited to get things going.

Mike Lowry: Do you see yourself as similar to any of the upperclass forwards on the team in terms of style and skill set?

Chase Stevenson: I wouldn't say there's one guy that I play exactly like. We've got a lot of great players. If there's one guy I would pick out it would be Charlie Kelleher. We're obviously a similar size and just the way he controls the puck and plays with a lot of skill. He's responsible at both ends of the ice which is something I take pride in as well.

Neutral Zone Scouting Report

Game Review, November, 2018
"Chase’s skating is start and go; he can really pick up speed and stop on a dime. He protects the puck well by keeping it close to his body, as well as uses his dangles to make it difficult to steal. He creates space with his speed, capitalizing on a one-on-one opportunity. He doesn’t shy away from the rougher parts of the area as his aggressiveness on the penalty kill resulted in heavy checks way down low."

"UNH Commit Robby Griffin: A High IQ, High Effort Player"

Interview

I had an opportunity to interview Robby Griffin at the UNH Hockey Media Day on September 25th.

Mike Lowry ("C-H-C"): What would you like UNH fans to know about you, both as a person and a hockey player?

Robby Griffin: Off the ice, I'm a person who works well with people, likes to be in big groups, and can read people real well in big group environments. So, I'm a good locker room guy and someone that people want to know. I'm usually friendly and like to keep it loose before a game but I'm dialed in when things are important.

On the ice, I like to model my game after players like Patrice Bergeron of the Bruins. I like to play like him. He's like my idol. He's a good two-way forward, completes his responsibilities in the D-zone, and wins faceoffs, but he's also good offensively.

Mike Lowry: He's sort of an understated guy and he's not very demonstrative on the ice. He just does his job. Are you similar or do you show your emotions more than he does?

Robby Griffin: I'm pretty calm on the ice. I wouldn't say I'm a flashy player and I just get the job done. It's not just an under the radar type thing because I still like to produce. It's just not for the show - it's like get your responsibilities done and produce whatever the team needs.

Lowry: Do you see yourself as similar to any of the upperclass forwards on the team in terms of style and skill set?

Griffin: Being a center, I'd say a role model on the team is Liam Blackburn. Watching him play in practice, it's the way I want to do it. He's very good at the faceoff dot. He's good in the D-zone and he puts up good numbers offensively. He wins a lot of puck battles in the corners - it's like impossible to take the puck off his stick. He just gets the job done. He's not the most flashy player but he always produces and does the job on both ends of the ice.

2018-19 Highlight Reel

Neutral Zone Scouting Report

From the NCDC Fall Beantown Classic, October, 2018
"Robby is the best prospect and probably the best player in the NCDC as a 2001. He does not jump off the ice at you as he does not force his skill on the game. He is really smart stays around the puck and jumps to chances. Stole a puck Saturday and quickly buried it top corner. Elite shot. Plays center and liked to be the F3. Sneaks in and out of scoring areas. Settles in scoring spots. His stride is excellent as he gets every bit of his legs. Pushed pace on the rush and in the zone made smart passes. He moved the puck board to board and stretched defenses to create space. He has improved getting to tough areas and has learned to carve out space in the net front and win pucks on the wall. High IQ, high effort player who is tough, talented and skilled. He is a hockey player who consistently makes plays. Lots more upside."
