UNH Recruits Update: Dec-31-2013

Warren Foegele - Player of the Month
Ara Nazarian - Player of the Week

Player of the Month - Warren Foegele

Over the past month, 17-year-old Warren Foegele (DOB: 4/1/1996) and his St. Andrew's College teammates have made the 600 mile, 10-hour journey from Aurora, Ontario to New England to play in two NE Prep Hockey Showcases. Each time, both Foegele - a 2015 UNH recruit - and the Saints let the US junior hockey world know that some prep schools north of the border can really play.

At the Belmont Hill's Jamboree on November 29-30, St. Andrew's defeated the host team 6-2, the Winchendon School 7-4, and Governor's Academy 7-0. The 6'1", 182 lbs., Foegele (Pronounced Foe-gull), a senior alternate captain for the Saints, posted 6 goals (including the game-winner against Belmont Hill) and 6 assists.

The U.S. Hockey Report covered the Belmont Hill's Jamboree and provided this analysis of Foegele's performance (the USHR article also appeared on the St. Andrew's website):
"For St. Andrew’s, Foegele, who is almost certain to hear his name called at the NHL draft next June, was a constant force in all three zones, and very strong on the puck. He’s a determined, hungry player who plays through guys, protects the puck well, and has a skill level that it is equal to his compete level."
The USHR appraisal of Foegele was noteworthy in it's prediction that he "almost certainly" would be drafted by an NHL team next June in the 2014 Entry Draft. To date, neither the NHL Central Scouting Service's Preliminary 2014 North American Ones to Watch (Sept, 2013) or Preliminary 2014 November Players to Watch lists have included Warren Foegele.

On the balmy, Saturday before Christmas, I made the trek down to the St. Sebastian's Hockey Tournament in Needham, MA to watch St. Andrew's face off against the Northwood School (Lake Placid, NY). Several NHL scouts and some college hockey coaches were in attendance. Warren Foegele did not disappoint.

As the SAC hockey website reported, the night before, Foegele drew a penalty in the overtime period against Thayer Academy by "splitting the defense and driving to the net". He went on to score the game-winner as St. Andrew's downed Thayer 2-1.

In the semi-final game against Northwood, St. Andrew's fell behind 2-0 in the first period. Each game consisted of two, 25-minute periods. In this video sequence, St. Andrew's is on the power play and the left-shot Foegele (#3) is positioned on the half-boards to the left of the Northwood goalie. Note Foegele's accurate passing, maneuvering in tight spaces, and quick-release shots:

With Northwood ahead 3-1 late in the first period, St. Andrew's went on another power play. Foegele received a pass in the high slot and ripped a wrist shot under the Northwood goalie's glove.

Northwood went ahead 4-3 nine minutes into the second, and final, period and kept St. Andrew's at bay for most of the remainder of regulation. With less than 2 minutes left, Northwood went on a power play. In a scoring sequence so improbable I didn't have my iphone at the ready, Foegele gathered the puck in his own end and carried it down the middle of the ice. Surrounded by three Northwood players, Foegele deked in neutral ice creating some space. As he crossed the Northwood blueline, he snapped a wrister low to the ice and into the back of the net.

Neither team scored in the 5-minute overtime setting up a shootout. The first two shooters on each team didn't score and the third Northwood shooter also came up short. The stage was set for Warren Foegele to win another game for St. Andrew's. His game-winning, shootout goal speaks for itself:

In the championship game, St. Andrew's easily downed St. Sebastian's 5-1. UNH hockey fans interested in watching Warren Foegele play will have an oppportunity on January 3rd and 4th at the USPHL Winter Showcase to be held at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough, MA. One final note on Foegele - on December 17th, the Penticton Vees of the BCHL announced that he will be playing for the Vees next season. Warren is on track to enroll at UNH in the Fall of 2015.

Player of the Week - Ara Nazarian

Another 17-year-old UNH recruit is off to a lightening fast start this season. Ara Nazarian (DOB: 6/19/1996), a junior at Malden Catholic High School, and his Lancer teammates are the defending Massachusetts Super 8 Champions. In fact, they are gunning for their 4th title in a row.

Malden Catholic has won their first four games and the 5'10", 170 lbs, Nazarian is the team's leading scorer with 6 goals and 8 assists. Last weekend, the Lancers won the Second Annual Chris Serino Christmas Classic with a 6-2 win over Hingham High School on Friday and a 4-1 victory over Austin Prep on Saturday. The tournament honors the late Chris Serino, the long-time coach at Malden Catholic, former Head Coach at Merrimack College, and Assistant Coach at UNH.

In the opening game against Hingham, Nazarian figured in all 6 Malden Catholic goals scoring three and assisting on the other three. Here's the post-game interview with Ara courtesy of ESPNBoston.com:

Saturday's Championship Game featured the #1 ranked Austin Prep Cougars against #2 ranked Malden Catholic. Nazarian scored the game-winning goal and assisted on two others. He was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

Last spring, Nazarian was selected by the Des Moines Buccaneers in the USHL Futures Draft. In an interview with the blog last April when he committed to UNH, Nazarian indicated that he would decide at the end of this season where he would play in the 2014-15 season.

UNH Loses to Cornell in Florida College Hockey Classic

Jeff Silengo w/Goal & Assist
Against Cornell

For two teams who hadn't played in three weeks, the Big Red of Cornell and the UNH Wildcats came out of the gate with energy in the opening round of the Florida College Hockey Classic. UNH broke the ice just 5 minutes into the game.

The Casey Thrush-Kyle Smith-Jeff Silengo line entered the Cornell zone on a 3-on-2 break and Thrush snapped a shot off, with Smith parked in front of Cornell goalie Andy Iles. The shot was blocked and senior Jeff Silengo got the puck back out to freshman Matias Cleland at the left point. Cleland zipped a pass to Brett Pesce at the right point who flipped a shot toward the net. Kyle Smith tipped the puck to Silengo who was crashing the net to Iles' right. Silengo buried his shot despite being tightly defended.

With just over 11 minutes left in the opening period, Cornell was able to create a mismatch with their first line of Lowry (no relation)-Bardreau-McCarron out against UNH's fourth line of Kelleher-Camper-Bourque. Bardreau won the faceoff in the Cornell end, McCarron rushed through all three zones and worked a nifty give-and-go with Lowry. Lowry's backhand pass connected with McCarron's backhand and he flipped it over Casey DeSmith's blocker. Game tied 1-1. The period ended with UNH outshooting Cornell 17-9.

The uptempo pace continued into the second period. A little more than 2 minutes into the period, Cornell defenseman Reece Wilcox carried the puck end-to-end and dumped it behind DeSmith. The puck was tipped around the boards by Jeff Kubiak to Rodger Craig who passed it out to defenseman Joakim Ryan at the left point. Ryan flipped a wrister through a crowd of players and the puck got behind DeSmith. Cornell 2, UNH 1.

As the second period wound down, Matt Willows and Eric Freschi received matching penalties for hitting after the whistle. Shortly after, Kevin Goumas was called for slashing setting up a 4-on-3 Cornell power play. UNH successfully killed off the initial penalty and Willows, who had jumped onto the ice from the penalty box, was fed a lead pass by Grayson Downing. Willows carried the puck deep into the Cornell end but his centering pass was blocked. Ryan gathered the puck in front of the Cornell net and sent a long-range pass to Christian Hilbrich at the center ice faceoff circle. Hilbrich made a touch pass to Brian Ferlin as he crossed into the UNH zone. Ferlin fired an initial shot which DeSmith saved with his left leg pad, but Ferlin cleaned up the rebound for a 3-1 lead.

A couple minutes into the final period, UNH pulled to within one on a quirky goal by defenseman Justin Agosta. Senior captain Eric Knodel head-manned the puck to Agosta at the red line and Justin flipped it on net. The puck took a funny bounce and eluded Iles.

For the remainder of the third period, UNH had stretches of sustained pressure and outshot Cornell 18-6. But Iles was up to the test. With 1:26 left in regulation, UNH pulled DeSmith for an extra skater. UNH kept the puck in the Cornell end for about 20 seconds but did not get a shot on goal. Bardreau scored the empty-netter.

With the out-of-conference loss to Cornell, UNH's overall record fell to 9-10-1. Cornell, who is in 5th place in the ECAC, improved it's record to 8-4-2. The Wildcats will face Princeton Sunday afternoon at 4:05 in the Tournament's consolation game. Cornell faces Maine in the Championship Game.

All I Want for Christmas is a Jumbotron - Volume 2

Imagine the Whittemore Center with a Jumbotron

New Video Scoreboard in Schneider
Arena at Providence College
Three Christmases ago, I asked Santa for a state-of-the-art, color, high-definition, video replay capabable, out-of-town scores streaming, Jumbotron (no dance cam necessary) for the Whittemore Center. Like Ralphie in The Christmas Story, I did my level best to make the case for why I - and Wildcat Nation - needed, nay deserved, a new video scoreboard (see re-post below).

Sadly, another Christmas is about to pass without a Jumbotron under the tree. So listen up Santa, I'm not done pleading my case. Almost all the other big kids on the block have at least one video scoreboard in their arena (with apologies to Vermont and Merrimack fans). Heck, even Providence College got one of their very own this season.

And Santa, hockey fans from all over the country will be coming to the Whittemore Center in early 2016. What will the neighbors think when they attend the crown jewel of Women's Hockey - The Frozen Four - and realize they can't view a replay of the winning goal?

Here's hoping this post doesn't become a holiday tradition.

Originally posted on December 23, 2011

Ever since instant replays became commonplace on TV coverage of the NFL in the 1960's (it's true, you can look it up), the brains of sports fans have been trained to look for them. Exciting plays, scores, near misses, controversial calls - we want to see them again, the sooner the better. With the proliferation of Jumbotrons and other video scoreboards in hockey arenas all over the country, fans and players alike gaze upwards to see what just happened. But not at the Whittemore Center, home of the UNH Wildcats.

Travelling to away games this season, I've noticed how integral the video scoreboard has become to the college hockey experience at many schools. The type of scoreboard and the way the video display is used often reflects the character of the school. The Agganis Arena at Boston University, opened in 2005, has all the bells, whistles, and glitz you'd expect at a venue in the entertainment hub of New England. The robust, 4-sided Jumbotron suspended over center ice is shaped like the one at the old Boston Garden. When the game is in progress, the video displays on each side are used like an IMAX theater. The fans can either follow the actual players on the ice or watch the live video of the play around the puck. To maximize its entertainment value, the video scoreboard at Agganis is also used for other purposes such as player interviews and the between-periods dance contest.

In contrast, Harvard University utilizes its video scoreboard in a much more understated way. The Bright Hockey Center, originally built in 1956 and renovated/expanded in 1978, also has a four-sided video scoreboard suspended over center ice but it is smaller and tucked up into the rafters. In between periods, fans are shown a minidocumentary on the history of Harvard Hockey.

When the Whittemore Center in Durham, NH was opened in 1995, it was a state-of-the-art hockey facility. For the fans it offers great site lines, a spacious promenade where you can still see the ice, clean and ample restrooms, many seats with arms and backs, and good quality concession stands. Upgrades have included seamless glass on the boards. Players are attracted by the spacious locker rooms and amenities, the olympic-sized rink, and the fan enthusiasm.

The only element missing from the hockey experience at the Whittemore Center is a video scoreboard. Much of the infrastructure is in place. The wiring was reportedly installed years ago and TV cameras are provided through UNHWildcats.TV. Their coverage now includes instant replays.

Of course, budgets at New Hampshire's flagship university are tight and getting tighter every year. New Hampshire taxpayers are known for their thriftiness (some would say stinginess). However, a new video scoreboard does not need to be an extravagant Jumbotron. It would be more fitting to purchase a single-sided scoreboard to replace the one at the north end of the arena. Would you rather watch the two, beloved stick-figure fans in stilted "animation" or full-color, instant replays of the hockey action?

Perhaps the best solution would be a video scoreboard similar to the one some fans saw at St. Cloud State University earlier this season. Take advantage of New Hampshire's entrepreneurial spirit, round up several prominent businesses based in New Hampshire, and surround the video screen with their logos. Doesn't matter much whether the logo square footage far exceeds the size of the video display as long as fans can see the replays. Or maybe some former UNH players who have lucrative careers in the sport could guarantee contributions to a fund drive specifically for a video scoreboard for The Whitt.

It's best not to underestimate the value a video scoreboard has in recruiting talented players to UNH. Watch any NHL or NCAA hockey game and notice what the players on the bench automatically do following an important play in a game. Whether they want to see themselves in action, review a controversial call, or see a pretty goal-scoring play, the players are looking up at the video screen. It's as much a part of the modern hockey game as composite hockey sticks.

UNH Recruits Update: Dec-17-2013

2015 UNH Recruit Rich Boyd Directs
Traffic on Cushing Academy Penalty Kill

Player of the Week - Rich Boyd

Last season, in his junior year at Cushing Academy, co-captain Rich Boyd helped lead the Penguins to the New England Prep Large School Championship. Boyd was the top-scoring defenseman on the Cushing squad and his 9 goals were the 5th highest among all New England Prep defenders.

Although Boyd was drafted by the Omaha Lancers of the USHL last April, he chose to return to Cushing for his senior year. So far, both Boyd and the Penguins are off to fast starts. Cushing's overall record is 6-1-0 and they were ranked #3 in the most recent U.S. Hockey Report Prep Hockey Poll. Boyd is scoring at a point-a-game pace with 2 goals and 5 assists in 7 games.

On Wednesday, I had an opportunity to watch Cushing play at Williston-Northampton. As a senior captain, Rich Boyd is a key player for Coach Rob Gagnon's team. Boyd is a starting defenseman and plays on Cushing's first power play and penalty kill units. About 7 minutes into the first period with the scored tied 1-1, Boyd carried the puck, with speed, through the neutral zone. As he crossed the blueline, he unloaded a slap shop, cleanly beating the Williston-Northampton goalie. He also added an assist on Cushing's 5th goal on a power play in the third period. Cushing pulled away with a 7-3 victory.

As an 18-year-old (DOB: 6/7/1995), the 6'3", 185 lb. Boyd is a talented, mobile defensemen. A number of skills were on display in the Cushing win over Williston-Northampton including:
~ Skating and stickwork - On two occasions, Boyd was the only defender backchecking on a 2-on-1 break. While skating backward, he stayed in front of the rushing forwards and managed to poke the puck away.
~ Bomb of a shot - Boyd's slap shot is booming and his wrist shot is quick. Both are accurate and tend to travel just inches off the ice (not rising and missing the net high or wide).
~ On breakouts, Boyd sees the ice extremely well, finds the open man, and makes accurate passes.
~ Piloting the power play - Cushing utilizes a umbrella set up on the power play with Boyd the sole player positioned near the middle of the blueline. From this position, Boyd moves the puck smartly to the wings and players advancing to the net. His accurate shot comes into play when he sees an open seam.

In an interview with the blog when he committed to UNH, Boyd indicated he is likely to play a year in the USHL after graduating from Cushing and before he enrolls at UNH. It will be interesting to follow his progress as Cushing makes another bid for a New England Prep crown.

UNH Recruits Update: Dec-9-2013

2014 UNH Wildcat
Shane Eiserman

Player of the Week - Shane Eiserman

18-year-old Shane Eiserman had his sights set on the University of New Hampshire from an early age. In a recent article on Yahoo Sports, Shane said:
"Growing up, there was always a rivalry with my brothers [William and Christopher] when we played street hockey. I wanted to be UNH and they wanted to be BC [Boston College]. I kind of wanted to go against them. I fell in love with that college and its program. From probably five years old that's where I wanted to go. My godmother [Christie Hill], for my Christmas present she used to always get me a UNH shirt and some tickets. When I signed [his NCAA letter of intent], she teared up a bit."
For the native of West Newbury, Massachusetts, the road to Durham has included stops at St. John's Prep in Danvers, MA, Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, and the U.S. National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This season, Eiserman is finishing his senior year in high school and playing for the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL.

Eiserman has identified "confidence with the puck" as an objective for his final year of junior hockey. As his performance last week shows, Shane is achieving his goal. On Saturday night, the 6'2", 200 lbs., power forward potted two goals in the Saints 6-5 victory over the Waterloo Black Hawks. The night before, Eiserman dished the primary assist on the game-winning goal against Team USA. The previous weekend, he posted a goal and an assist in Dubuque's 8-1 trouncing of the Fargo Force. Eiserman's 3 goals and 2 assists over the three-game stretch bumped his point production up to 12 points in 17 games.

On the November "Players to Watch" list, the NHL Central Scouting Service identified Shane Eiserman as a candidate for selection in the 2nd or 3rd round of the 2014 NHL Draft. The last UNH forward to be drafted that highly was James van Riemsdyk who was the second overall pick in the 2007 NHL Draft.

UNH Recruits Update: Dec-3-2013

2015 UNH Recruit
Warren Foegele

Player of the Week - Warren Foegele

St. Andrew's College is a university-preparatory school in Aurora, Ontario, about 30 miles north of Toronto. The varsity hockey team plays in two different leagues. The Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association (CISAA) includes 4 other prep schools in Ontario and one in Buffalo, NY. The Midwest Prep Hockey League includes 6 prep schools from the Upper Midwest of the United States and 4 Canadian prep schools.

Over this past weekend, St. Andrew's and their senior alternate captain Warren Foegele took a break from league play and made the 600 mile trek to Belmont, MA for the Belmont Hill's Jamboree. The Saints competed against three New England Prep Schools - Belmont Hill, Winchendon, and Governor's - and won all three games. For the NE Preps, the games were considered early season "scrimmages" and consisted of three 15-minute periods. St. Andrew's began their season in mid-November and entered the Jamboree undefeated in their first 10 games of the 2013-14 season.

In the opening matchup against Belmont Hill, the 6'1", 182 lbs., Foegele (Pronounced Foe-gull) scored a hat trick, which included the game-winning goal, in the Saints' 6-2 victory. Foegele figured in all 6 St. Andrew's goals, scoring three and assisting on the other three.

In the Saturday noontime game, St. Andrew's downed the Winchendon School 7-4 and Foegele scored another goal. The Jamboree wrapped up late Saturday afternoon with a contest between St. Andrew's and Governor's Academy. Once again, Foegele lead the Saints with 2 goals and 3 assists in a 7-0 shutout.

The U.S. Hockey Report covered the Jamboree and provided this analysis of Foegele's performance (the USHR article also appeared on the St.
Warren Foegele (DOB: 4/1/1996) is a senior at St. Andrew's and is eligible for the 2014 NHL draft. U.S. Hockey Report is the first scouting entity to identify Foegele as a likely NHL draft pick this June. When Foegele committed to UNH last February, he indicated in an interview with this blog that the Fall of 2015 is the target date for his enrollment. He also described his plan to play Junior A hockey in the 2014-15 season. Last August, Foegele participated in the Penticton Vees (BCHL) training camp and posted an assist in his first exhibition game. Unfortunately, he became ill and missed the remainder of the Vees' exhibition games.

NOTE
The statistics for the recruits, presented in the table, are categorized by the year the player and UNH coaches have targeted for enrollment in UNH. For example, the "2014 Recruits" have a target of the Fall of 2014 to begin playing for UNH.

UNH and Casey DeSmith Shut Out Colorado College 3-0

Junior Casey DeSmith
Registers 3rd Shutout

On the strength of outstanding goaltending by Casey DeSmith and three goals by the Nick Sorkin-Kevin Goumas-Matt Willows line, the UNH Wildcats earned their second victory in as many days against struggling Colorado College. DeSmith deserves the #1 Star for his 32 saves. Here's DeSmith in action in the third period with UNH ahead 1-0 and CC pressuring:

Senior Nick Sorkin continued his scoring blitz with his 11th goal of the season. The goal came at 12:28 of the second period on a UNH power play. He was assisted by Kevin Goumas and Justin Agosta. Sorkin knocked home a rebound off a Goumas deflection. Sorkin has scored 8 goals in his last 9 games.

After killing off two penalties early in the third period, UNH would grab a two-goal lead on a pretty goal by senior Kevin Goumas at the 17:26 mark. It was a classic individual effort by Goumas as he carried the puck through the neutral zone and into the CC end then ripped a wrister from the top of the slot beating goalie Josh Thorimbert:

Colorado College pulled Thorimbert twice over the final two minutes. With 50 seconds remaining in regulation, Thorimbert went to the CC bench for the second time and Kevin Goumas scored an empty net goal - his second goal of the night and 7th of the season:

With the two-game sweep of Colorado College, UNH improved its record to 9-7-1. CC's record fell to 1-10-2. UNH plays Boston College next weekend in a home-and-home series. Friday night's game is at the Conte Forum and Saturday's is at the Whittemore Center. BC is in the midst of a two-game losing streak. Maine beat them 5-1 last Saturday and Holy Cross downed them 5-4 on Friday.
