2022 BioSteel All-American Prospects Game

Since 2012, USA Hockey has co-sponsored an annual game featuring the top American-born players eligible for the subsequent NHL Draft. The All-American Prospects Game (AAPG) has consistently featured dozens of players selected in the NHL Draft held the following summer. The inaugural event, called the CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game, featured 23 players drafted in the 2013 Entry Draft, including 3 first-rounders. Last year's AAPG, played in April 2021, included 24 players subsequently drafted in June. Four of these players were drafted in the 1st Round.

The current UNH men's hockey roster includes 2 players who competed in the AAPG and were drafted by a NHL team. Freshman defenseman Alex Gagne played in the 2020 game. While he wasn't selected in the 2020 NHL Draft, Gagne was chosen by the Tampa Bay Lightening in the 6th Round (#196 Overall) in the 2021 Draft. Sophomore defenseman Luke Reid also played in the 2020 AAPG and was selected in the 6th Round (#166 Overall) of the 2020 NHL Draft by the Nashville Predators.

The 2022 BioSteel All-American Prospects Game was held last Monday at the USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan and was broadcast live on NHL Network. For the 44 American-born prospects, it was a golden opportunity to make an impression on the over 210 NHL scouts in attendance. Two UNH commits - Damien Carfagna from Wood Ridge, New Jersey and Tyler Muszelik from Long Valley, NJ - seized the opportunity and excelled.

~ DAMIEN CARFAGNA (DOB: 12/12/02) played on Team Blue's third defensive pair and also logged minutes on the power play and penalty kill. Overall, he posted 2 shots on goal, 0 penalty minutes, and a +/- rating of +3. In the 3-on-3 overtime, Carfagna created the most memorable play of the game.

With 2:43 remaining, Carfagna blocked a shot at the top of the slot and the puck bounced off the sidewall. Jack Harvey, a forward for the Chicago Steel and a Boston University commit, passed the puck back to Carfagna just inside their own blueline and he took it from there.

Carfagna carried the puck through the neutral zone with Cutter Gauthier, the leading goal scorer for the USNTDP U-18 team and a Boston College commit, joining the rush on the right wing. This created a 2-on-1 break. Carfagna cruised into the right faceoff circle and ripped a wrist shot over the goalie's blocker for the game-winner. Here's a video of the entire play:



So far this season, Damien Carfagna has scored 4 goals and 28 assists in 29 games with the Green Bay Gamblers. He has the most assists among all USHL defensemen and second most points. He is on track to enroll at UNH in Fall 2022.

This is the second year Carfagna has been eligible for the draft. In my article "Will UNH Commit(s) Be Selected in 2021 NHL Entry Draft?" last July, I speculated that Carfagna was a possible late 7th round pick but "may need one more season to demonstrate excellence". He has certainly upped his offensive game this season - he's increased assists from 12 (last season) to 26 (to date this season) and power play assists from 1 to 11. Based on his improved play with the Gamblers and outstanding performance in the BioSteel All-American Prospects game, I'd say Carfagna has a very good chance of being drafted in the late rounds of the 2022 NHL Draft.

~ TYLER MUSZELIK (DOB: 7/1/04) was the starting goalie for Team White and played the entire first period and the first 10 minutes of the second period. He faced 13 shots on goal and made a save on each of them. Muszelik became the 6th goalie in the history of the AAPG to stop every shot that he faced. So far this season, the 6'3", 193 lbs., Muszelik has posted a 13-4-2 record for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program Under-18 team. His overall Goals Against Average is 2.95 with a Save Percentage of .896.

Over the course of the 2021-22 season, the NTDP U-18 team will play 15 exhibition games against NCAA Division 1 teams and 4 against Division 3 schools. To date, Muszelik has played in 9 of these NCAA games and has a 6-2-0 record with a 2.93 GAA and .904 Save %. High points have included 4-3 wins against Notre Dame and Boston University and a 2-0 shutout of North Dakota. Like Carfagna, Tyler Muszelik is on track to enroll at UNH in Fall 2022.

On January 12th, the NHL Central Scouting Service announced it's MidTerm Rankings for the 2022 NHL Draft. Tyler Muszelik was the 5th ranked North American goalie. Historically, a midterm rank that high is usually followed by that goalie being drafted by an NHL team. UNH's current goalie, Mike Robinson from Bedford, NH, was selected by the San Jose Sharks in Round 3 (86th Overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft.

Interview

I had an opportunity to interview Ryan Conmy, via email, about his hockey career and commitment to UNH:

Mike Lowry: Congratulations on your commitment to play for the University of New Hampshire. How did you first become interested in UNH?

Ryan Conmy: Thank you! I first became very interested in UNH once I got a call from Coach Giuliano. My advisor continued to rave to me about the hockey program and the coaches. I saw a couple videos of the Whittemore Center when it was packed, and it just felt like one of those places where you want to be.

Mike Lowry: What are the main reasons you chose to commit to UNH?

Ryan Conmy: I chose UNH for multiple reasons. During my visit and walking around campus, I felt like it was a very welcoming place with people just saying hi as you walk by.

The atmosphere and fans at the games are unbelievable. It is definitely a special place to be. The coaching staff had stayed in touch with me throughout my injury, and always checked up on how I was doing. It just goes to show how UNH is a big family.

Lowry: What other college programs did you consider during the recruiting process? Which schools did you visit and which ones made an offer to you?

Conmy: The process of recruiting has definitely been a little bit different ever since COVID, but I got the chance to visit a handful of schools during the summer, including UNH, some other Hockey East schools, and some ECAC schools. I have always dreamed of going to a Hockey East school. So, once I got the offer from UNH, I knew it was the one I had been waiting for. It was definitely a no brainer for me.

Lowry: At this stage in your development, what are the main strengths of your game? What areas are you trying to improve?

Conmy: I think a strength of mine is my shot. I have always loved to shoot the puck and score goals. It is most definitely the best part of the game.

I am always trying to improve on everything in my game, but something specifically I would like to work on is small details such as stick placement and being in the right spot no matter if the puck is in the offensive, defensive, or neutral zone.

Lowry: I’ve read you missed the USA Hockey Selects 17 Development Camp last June and the early part of this season with Bishop Kearney Selects 18U due to injury. What was the rehabilitation process like for you and do you feel you’ve returned to full strength?

Conmy: It was definitely a long recovery process, and tons of physical therapy. Just trying to make the most out of the recovery is what I did. My coaches and PT doc were amazing in helping me through the physical and mental aspects of a long recovery.

I also had plenty of time to practice skills that I wouldn’t have normally practiced. I feel like that was a positive that came out of the whole process. After all of the rehabbing, I am definitely at full strength and excited to finish the season strong with Bishop Kearney Selects.

Lowry: When do you plan to graduate from high school? What are your academic strengths and interests? Have you thought about what you might major in when you enroll at UNH?

Conmy: I have a late October birthday in 2004, so I am a junior this year. I plan to graduate next year in 2023. I have always been interested in dealing with money and investments, and I believe math is my strength in school. I haven’t officially decided yet, but finance and business I feel would suit me well.

"Conmy is Bishop Kearney U16’s leading scorer this season and showed why here. He’s as skilled with the puck as anyone in the tournament and has exceptional poise and patience with possession. The puck sticks to his blade and he can slow it down and pick defences apart with precision passing or he can accelerate instantly and put defenders on their heels. He’s smooth in everything he does; he has a smooth stride, he has smooth hands and he has a smooth and accurate release. A puck possession style-forward who never forces the issue or throws pucks away; he’s smart, he’s calm under pressure and elusive in high traffic areas."

"He has touch on his passes and can elevate it over stick blades seamlessly and is able to skate to open ice, create time and space for himself and lure opponents towards him to open up space for his teammates. Conmy has gotten stronger this season and isn’t solely an open ice player; he can weave his way through a crowd and curl and spin-off body contact. He was drafted in the eighth round of the OHL draft by Niagara and has major NCAA/CHL upside. He’ll likely be an early pick in this year’s phase II USHL Draft."

The videos, shown below, include excerpts from the UNH men's hockey press conference held on January 13, 2022. The team is coming off a 2-game win streak in which they scored 7 goals against Mercyhurst and 5 against Clarkson. Across those games, freshman forward Liam Devlin scored 2 goals and an assist and was named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week on January 3rd. Freshman defenseman Colton Huard tallied a goal and 4 assists and was named Hockey East Defender of the Week on January 10th.

~ I asked UNH Head Coach Mike Souza about Devlin's and Huard's performance and what they do very well. In addition, I asked Coach about goalie coach Ty Conklin's first appearance behind the UNH bench in the Clarkson game.



~ I also asked senior forward Jackson Pierson about (1) the strengths of his linemate Liam Devlin and (2) being nominated for the Hobey Baker Award.



~ Finally, I asked senior defenseman Ryan Verrier about his offensive play including the primary assist on one of Devlin's goals against Clarkson.

~ Damien Carfagna (DOB: 12/12/02), the 5'11", 175 lbs., left-shot defenseman from Wood Ridge, NJ, has become one of the top defensemen in the United States Hockey League. He's played 24 games for the Green Bay Gamblers this season and his +/- rating of +14 is tied for 4th among all USHL defensemen.

Carfagna's offensive numbers are even more impressive. He's scored at least 1 point in 17 of his 24 games and had 10 multipoint games. Carfagna's 26 assists are the 3rd highest among all USHL players. 11 of the assists have come on the power play which is tied for 5th in the league. Overall, his 30 points (4 Goals, 26 Assists) are tied for 8th highest in the USHL. I had an opportunity to interview Jake Dunlap, via email, about his hockey career and commitment to UNH:

Mike Lowry: Congratulations on your commitment to play for the University of New Hampshire. What are the main reasons you chose UNH?

Jake Dunlap: Thank you, I chose UNH because of their culture, coaching staff, and location of the school. Growing up in New Hampshire it was always my dream to be a Wildcat and I’m excited to have the opportunity to do so.

Mike Lowry: When you renewed the recruiting process, what other college programs did you consider? Which schools did you visit and which ones made an offer to you?

Jake Dunlap: When I reopened my recruitment I was considering Penn State, Quinnipiac, and UConn. The only school I visited was Quinnipiac but I knew, once I was uncommitted, I wanted to go to UNH.

Lowry: At this stage in your hockey development, what are the strengths of your game? What areas are you trying to improve?

Dunlap: My strengths are my skating, compete level, and ability to create offense for myself and players around me. I would like to improve my play in the defensive zone and little details like stopping on the puck, back checking, and stopping at the net.

Lowry: So far this season, you've scored 11 goals and 6 assists in 27 games with the Madison Capitols in the USHL. All of your goals have come on 5-on-5 situations. I've seen highlights of the 3 goals you scored in December and each were shots from in front of the net. What makes you effective at getting to the net?

Dunlap: My compete and grit help me get to the net and win 50/50 battles to score goals out front. The majority of goals, especially once you get to higher levels, are scored right in front of the net so I take pride in getting there and burying greasy goals.

Lowry: Have you had an opportunity to watch the current UNH team play? If so, how do you think you can help the team when you join it?

Dunlap: I’ve only had the chance to watch one game since the majority of the time they are playing I also have a game but I think I can bring a high level of compete and fast pace to the lineup.

Lowry: What are your academic strengths and interests? Have you thought about what you might major in when you enroll at UNH?

Dunlap: I want to go into business when I’m older so I would like to major in something like finance or marketing.

USHL Weekend #4: Top 68, October 2021

"Scored a couple pretty nice goals over the weekend. During a game where the Capitals scored a lot of goals having many players stand out, I think Dunlap did one of the best jobs of this. He stood out by crashing the net and making plays in small areas. He’s strong on the puck and will defend players with his strength boxing out well. His overall grittiness to his hockey game makes him a complete package. With experience of what works and what doesn’t, I think he has a good chance of excelling at the next level."

"It would be hard to imagine a player who improved his stock more than Dunlap over the past week. He led a talented team in points and goals with a 5-3-8 line in 5 games and appeared to create a scoring chance nearly every shift. He is small but speedy, he hustles after pucks and has slippery hands in tight areas. He plays hard, he was relentless on the forecheck and was able to take advantage of turnovers and make plays off transitions and off the rush. He scored several one-touch goals around the net which showed that he has a good stick in tight and that he knows where to be and understands timing. He shoots with his head up, he reads goalies and has a deceptively quick, hard shot. He also proved to be a feisty penalty killer and a poised, skilled power play forward who was at his best making plays off the half wall.

His hustle disguises his hockey sense as he appears to be running all over the ice but he’s smarter than he appears and has great awareness; he throws low wristers off the pad to generate rebounds, he baits opponents and then passes to space and he finds the soft spots in his offensive zone and utilizes his time and space to make plays. He’ll return to New Hampton School next season and will certainly get more attention from NCAA and Junior teams as he entered camp undrafted and uncommitted. A smart, exciting, high compete forward worth watching."
