Interview

I had an opportunity to interview Ryan Conmy, via email, about his hockey career and commitment to UNH:

Mike Lowry: Congratulations on your commitment to play for the University of New Hampshire. How did you first become interested in UNH?

Ryan Conmy: Thank you! I first became very interested in UNH once I got a call from Coach Giuliano. My advisor continued to rave to me about the hockey program and the coaches. I saw a couple videos of the Whittemore Center when it was packed, and it just felt like one of those places where you want to be.

Mike Lowry: What are the main reasons you chose to commit to UNH?

Ryan Conmy: I chose UNH for multiple reasons. During my visit and walking around campus, I felt like it was a very welcoming place with people just saying hi as you walk by.

The atmosphere and fans at the games are unbelievable. It is definitely a special place to be. The coaching staff had stayed in touch with me throughout my injury, and always checked up on how I was doing. It just goes to show how UNH is a big family.

Lowry: What other college programs did you consider during the recruiting process? Which schools did you visit and which ones made an offer to you?

Conmy: The process of recruiting has definitely been a little bit different ever since COVID, but I got the chance to visit a handful of schools during the summer, including UNH, some other Hockey East schools, and some ECAC schools. I have always dreamed of going to a Hockey East school. So, once I got the offer from UNH, I knew it was the one I had been waiting for. It was definitely a no brainer for me.

Lowry: At this stage in your development, what are the main strengths of your game? What areas are you trying to improve?

Conmy: I think a strength of mine is my shot. I have always loved to shoot the puck and score goals. It is most definitely the best part of the game.

I am always trying to improve on everything in my game, but something specifically I would like to work on is small details such as stick placement and being in the right spot no matter if the puck is in the offensive, defensive, or neutral zone.

Lowry: I’ve read you missed the USA Hockey Selects 17 Development Camp last June and the early part of this season with Bishop Kearney Selects 18U due to injury. What was the rehabilitation process like for you and do you feel you’ve returned to full strength?

Conmy: It was definitely a long recovery process, and tons of physical therapy. Just trying to make the most out of the recovery is what I did. My coaches and PT doc were amazing in helping me through the physical and mental aspects of a long recovery.

I also had plenty of time to practice skills that I wouldn’t have normally practiced. I feel like that was a positive that came out of the whole process. After all of the rehabbing, I am definitely at full strength and excited to finish the season strong with Bishop Kearney Selects.

Lowry: When do you plan to graduate from high school? What are your academic strengths and interests? Have you thought about what you might major in when you enroll at UNH?

Conmy: I have a late October birthday in 2004, so I am a junior this year. I plan to graduate next year in 2023. I have always been interested in dealing with money and investments, and I believe math is my strength in school. I haven’t officially decided yet, but finance and business I feel would suit me well.

"Conmy is Bishop Kearney U16’s leading scorer this season and showed why here. He’s as skilled with the puck as anyone in the tournament and has exceptional poise and patience with possession. The puck sticks to his blade and he can slow it down and pick defences apart with precision passing or he can accelerate instantly and put defenders on their heels. He’s smooth in everything he does; he has a smooth stride, he has smooth hands and he has a smooth and accurate release. A puck possession style-forward who never forces the issue or throws pucks away; he’s smart, he’s calm under pressure and elusive in high traffic areas."

"He has touch on his passes and can elevate it over stick blades seamlessly and is able to skate to open ice, create time and space for himself and lure opponents towards him to open up space for his teammates. Conmy has gotten stronger this season and isn’t solely an open ice player; he can weave his way through a crowd and curl and spin-off body contact. He was drafted in the eighth round of the OHL draft by Niagara and has major NCAA/CHL upside. He’ll likely be an early pick in this year’s phase II USHL Draft."
