UNH Alumni in Pro Hockey 10-18-2023: Spotlight on James van Riemsdyk

Former UNH Star
James van Riemsdyk

News & Notes

~ James van Riemsdyk is currently playing in his 15th National Hockey League season. The Philadelphia Flyers drafted JVR second overall in the 2007 NHL Draft. He played his first 3 NHL seasons with the Flyers, the next 6 with Toronto, then back to Philadelphia for 5 more seasons.

In July, JVR signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Boston Bruins. Entering this season, van Riemsdyk had compiled 302 goals, 291 assists in 942 NHL regular season games plus 20 goals, 11 assists in 71 NHL playoff games.

Last Saturday, in his second game as a Bruin, JVR added 2 more goals to his NHL career totals. Both were on the Bruins' powerplay and the second was the game-winner. In a postgame video with Bruins' reporter Eric Russo, JvR talked about the goals and fitting into the Bruins' lineup.

James van Riemsdyk's career at UNH was relatively brief but illustrious. As a freshman in 2007-08, JVR tallied 11 goals, 23 assists in 31 games and UNH played in the NCAA Championship Tournament. He played one more season in 2008-09, scored 17 goals, 23 assists in 36 games, and lead the Wildcats to the Elite 8 round of the NCAA Tournament.
