News & Notes

As the North American junior hockey leagues commence their 2023-24 season, the University of New Hampshire men's hockey program has 15 young prospects committed for future seasons. 7 are on United States Hockey League rosters (Conn, Philbrick, de Haro, Player, Konevych, Grimes, Tournas), 5 in the British Columbia Hockey League (DeTurris, Eckholm, C. MacPherson, R. MacPherson, Primerano), and 1 in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (Bradshaw). 2 (Sadowski, Hyles) are slated to play New England Prep School hockey beginning in November. The newest, 2023-24 statistics for the UNH Commits are displayed in the table at the end of this article.

~ Ryan MacPherson (DOB: 3/2/05), the 6'1", 177 lbs., left-shot center from Windsor, Ontario and his twin brother Connor MacPherson, a 6'0", 177 lbs., right-shot winger, were top scorers last season in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League, a Canadian Junior B League. Ryan scored 39 goals, 60 assists in 73 games (1.36 PPG) for the Leamington Flyers and Connor posted 48 goals, 49 assists in 65 games (1.49 PPG). Leamington won their first Sutherland Cup in the GOJHL Playoffs and Connor was named series MVP.

During the 2023 NHL Draft in June, Ryan MacPherson was drafted in the 6th Round (#172 Overall) by the Philadelphia Flyers. Both he and Connor participated in the Flyers' Player Development Camp in early July.

The MacPherson twins signed a National Letter of Intent with UNH last Fall and are on track to enroll for the 2024-25 season. In preparation for Division I college hockey, they moved up from Canadian Junior B to Junior A this season. Last Saturday, in their second game with the Penticton Vees, both tallied their first British Columbia Hockey League goals.

Connor MacPherson broke the ice with this first period goal. He worked the give-and-go with Ryan in the middle of 4 Merritt Centennial players. It turned out to be the game-winner.

Ryan MacPherson followed up in the second period with this natural hat trick over an 8 and 1/2 minute stretch. On the third goal, Connor and Ryan got behind the Centennial defenders and Connor slipped a tape-to-tape, backhand pass to Ryan for the one-timer.

NOTE
The statistics for the commits, presented in the above table, are categorized by the projected year they will enroll in UNH. For example, the "2024 Commits" are projected to begin playing for UNH in the Fall of 2024. I have based these projections on the following factors:
~ Number of UNH players leaving the team at the end of the previous season and the position they played.
~ Number of incoming transfer players and the position they play.
~ If a National Letter of Intent has been signed.
~ The year the commit and UNH coaches originally targeted for enrollment in UNH.
~ How old the commit would be upon admission.
~ Number of years in junior hockey prior to admission.
~ The commit's performance in recent seasons as well as injuries.
~ Anticipated date of high school graduation.
