Interview

I had an opportunity to interview Jake Dunlap, via email, about his hockey career and commitment to UNH:

Mike Lowry: Congratulations on your commitment to play for the University of New Hampshire. What are the main reasons you chose UNH?

Jake Dunlap: Thank you, I chose UNH because of their culture, coaching staff, and location of the school. Growing up in New Hampshire it was always my dream to be a Wildcat and I’m excited to have the opportunity to do so.

Mike Lowry: When you renewed the recruiting process, what other college programs did you consider? Which schools did you visit and which ones made an offer to you?

Jake Dunlap: When I reopened my recruitment I was considering Penn State, Quinnipiac, and UConn. The only school I visited was Quinnipiac but I knew, once I was uncommitted, I wanted to go to UNH.

Lowry: At this stage in your hockey development, what are the strengths of your game? What areas are you trying to improve?

Dunlap: My strengths are my skating, compete level, and ability to create offense for myself and players around me. I would like to improve my play in the defensive zone and little details like stopping on the puck, back checking, and stopping at the net.

Lowry: So far this season, you've scored 11 goals and 6 assists in 27 games with the Madison Capitols in the USHL. All of your goals have come on 5-on-5 situations. I've seen highlights of the 3 goals you scored in December and each were shots from in front of the net. What makes you effective at getting to the net?

Dunlap: My compete and grit help me get to the net and win 50/50 battles to score goals out front. The majority of goals, especially once you get to higher levels, are scored right in front of the net so I take pride in getting there and burying greasy goals.

Lowry: Have you had an opportunity to watch the current UNH team play? If so, how do you think you can help the team when you join it?

Dunlap: I’ve only had the chance to watch one game since the majority of the time they are playing I also have a game but I think I can bring a high level of compete and fast pace to the lineup.

Lowry: What are your academic strengths and interests? Have you thought about what you might major in when you enroll at UNH?

Dunlap: I want to go into business when I’m older so I would like to major in something like finance or marketing.

"Scored a couple pretty nice goals over the weekend. During a game where the Capitals scored a lot of goals having many players stand out, I think Dunlap did one of the best jobs of this. He stood out by crashing the net and making plays in small areas. He’s strong on the puck and will defend players with his strength boxing out well. His overall grittiness to his hockey game makes him a complete package. With experience of what works and what doesn’t, I think he has a good chance of excelling at the next level."

"It would be hard to imagine a player who improved his stock more than Dunlap over the past week. He led a talented team in points and goals with a 5-3-8 line in 5 games and appeared to create a scoring chance nearly every shift. He is small but speedy, he hustles after pucks and has slippery hands in tight areas. He plays hard, he was relentless on the forecheck and was able to take advantage of turnovers and make plays off transitions and off the rush. He scored several one-touch goals around the net which showed that he has a good stick in tight and that he knows where to be and understands timing. He shoots with his head up, he reads goalies and has a deceptively quick, hard shot. He also proved to be a feisty penalty killer and a poised, skilled power play forward who was at his best making plays off the half wall.

His hustle disguises his hockey sense as he appears to be running all over the ice but he’s smarter than he appears and has great awareness; he throws low wristers off the pad to generate rebounds, he baits opponents and then passes to space and he finds the soft spots in his offensive zone and utilizes his time and space to make plays. He’ll return to New Hampton School next season and will certainly get more attention from NCAA and Junior teams as he entered camp undrafted and uncommitted. A smart, exciting, high compete forward worth watching."
