UNH Recruits Update: March-5-2014

#17 Brendan van Riemsdyk
Warren Foegele

Co-Players of the Week - Brendan van Riemsdyk & Warren Foegele

It's the height of playoff season for many of the young players who have committed to play for UNH in the future. While all have contributed to their team's success, the performance of two players stood out over the last week to 10 days.

Brendan van Riemsdyk

18-year-old Brendan van Riemsdyk has played for two teams this season. His travel team was the Jersey Hitmen 18U of the United States Premiere Hockey League. In addition, BvR is the senior captain of his high school team, the Christian Brothers Academy. Both teams made the playoffs.

Last Saturday, the Jersey Hitmen won the semifinal game against the Boston Junior Bruins 18U by a score of 3-1. For details, check out "UNH Recruits Charlie Kelleher & Brendan van Riemsdyk Face Off in USPHL Playoffs". Van Riemsdyk assisted on the Hitmen's empty net goal in the waning seconds. Here are some video highlights of BvR's play including his 4 shots on goal:

On Sunday, the Selects Academy defeated the Hitmen 6-0 in the USPHL 18U Championship Game. Across the three playoff games, van Riemsdyk posted the one assist in the semifinal game. In 10 regular season games, BvR posted 5 goals and 8 assists. He missed a number of Hitmen games early and midseason with respiratory issues.

After receiving a bye in the first round of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association, Non-Public School Tournament, the #3-Ranked Christian Brothers Academy played St. Rose High School last Thursday night. CBA won the second round game 7-1 and van Riemsdyk scored the Lancer's third and fourth goals. Then, BvR was off to Massachusetts with the Jersey Hitmen.

After the long trip home from North Andover, Massachusetts to Middletown, New Jersey on Sunday, Brendan had one day to prepare for the second playoff game with the Christian Brothers Academy. Last night, CBA faced St. Joseph High School in the quarterfinals. The Lancers' top line of van Riemsdyk-Hampton-Cusanelli accounted for 4 goals as CBA won 5-1. BvR posted 4 assists. Tomorrow night, CBA plays St. Augustine in the semifinals. Long-time rival Delbarton plays Morristown in the other semifinal game.

Warren Foegele

Anyone who has followed the blog will be familiar with the extraordinary season Warren Foegele has had. The 17-year-old senior at St. Andrew's College in Aurora, Ontario scored 32 goals and 30 assists in 35 regular season games. He lead St. Andrew's to the Midwest Prep Hockey League Championship scoring 6 goals and 3 assists in 3 playoff games.

St. Andrew's also competes in the Conference of Independent Schools Athletic Association. In the first round of the CISAA Playoffs, the Saints eliminated Ridley College in two games and Foegele scored 2 goals and 4 assists. That set up a best-of-three series for the CISAA Championship with long-time rival Upper Canada College. The two university preparatory schools have competed in athletics for 115 years.

St. Andrew's won the first game 4-1 and Warren Foegele scored the Saints' third goal. In Game 2, UCC rebounded with a 3-2 overtime win. 2016 UNH Justin Fregona scored St. Andrew's second goal but Foegele was kept off the scoresheet.

With the playoff series tied at one game apiece, St. Andrew's and Upper Canada College played for the Championship this afternoon in Aurora. Warren Foegele rose to the occasion scoring two goals in the Saints' 4-1 victory. Late in the first period, Foegele gathered a loose puck just inside the UCC zone and raced up center ice on a breakaway. He beat the UCC goalie low with a backhand shot.

UCC got to within a goal of St. Andrew's just 25 seconds into the final stanza. Foegele answered less than a minute later. J.D. Falconer set Warren up for a one-timer from the hash marks to the goalie's left.

Warren Foegele turns 18 next month and will graduate from St. Andrew's College this spring. He will enroll next fall at UNH as a "true" freshman. He is projected to be selected in the NHL Entry Draft this June, possibly as high as the the third or fourth round.

NOTE
The statistics for the recruits, presented in the table, are categorized by the year the player and UNH coaches have targeted for enrollment in UNH. For example, the "2014 Recruits" have a target of the Fall of 2014 to begin playing for UNH.
