UNH Defeats #19 Nebraska-Omaha 6-3

DURHAM, NH - In spite of the frigid cold, both outside and inside the Whittemore Center, the UNH Wildcats and University of Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks engaged in a heated battle in front of 3,000 hardy UNH fans. After giving up the first goal of the game, UNH got plenty of scoring from 10 different players.
1st Period
16:26 - UNO Scores First Goal - UNH 0, UNO 1 ~ The Mavericks' leading scorer Josh Archibald pots 12th goal of season. ~ UNH's fourth line of Bourque-Gaudreault-Hill had been on the ice for a prolonged shift. ~ Archibald was not covered in the mid-slot and he buried a rebound.10:40 - Captain Eric Knodel Scores 1st of 2 Power Play Goals - UNH 1, UNO 1 ~ UNH's top power play unit controlled the puck in the UNO zone ~ Knodel almost scored on a slap shot blast just before his goal. ~ Trevor van Riemsdyk's soft pass set up Knodel's wrister from the high slot. It was TvR's first of three assists on the night.
00:32 - Knodel Buries a Bomb From the Blueline - UNH 2, UNO 1 ~ UNH crisply moved the puck on this power play. ~ Kevin Goumas nearly scored from in close early in the PP. ~ Once again, TvR set up Knodel, this time with a backhand, touch pass.
2nd Period
16:10 - Ortega Ties It Up - UNH 2, UNO 2 ~ Freshman speedster Austin Ortega streaks in on a 3-on-2 rush and beats Casey DeSmith over his glove. ~ The UNH line of Correale-Downing-Speelman got caught deep in the UNO zone. ~ Ortega gained a half-stride on back-checking UNH defenseman Matias Cleland.7:42 - Matt Willows Scores 8th Goal of Season - UNH 3, UNO 2 ~ Willows created this scoring play by rubbing out a UNO player along the boards and stealing the puck. ~ Freshman defenseman Dylan Maller, playing in his second NCAA game, made a pretty, head-man pass to Willows to start the rush. ~ Freshman Collin Bourque, playing in only his 4th NCAA game, set up Goumas for the initial shot on goal. It was Bourque's first NCAA point. ~ Willows, parked on the doorstep, buried the rebound.
7:42 - Sophomore Dan Correale Nets Game-Winning Goal - UNH 4, UNO 2 ~ Casey Thrush made this scoring play possible with a fore-checking hit and steal. ~ Dylan Maller registered his first NCAA point on a soft touch pass to Justin Agosta at the right point. ~ Agosta made a thread-the-needle pass to Correale who was charging the net. ~ Correale gathered the puck, shifted it to his backhand, and flipped one over the UNO goalie's glove.
2:06 - Casey Thrush Pots 3rd Goal of Season - UNH 5, UNO 2 ~ UNH fans may very well be observing Trevor van Riemsdyk's second All-American season. ~ TvR single-handedly created this scoring play with an amazing, anticipatory steal at center ice. He then rushed into the UNO zone and fed a perfect pass to Thrush charging down the slot. ~ Thrush finished it off by drawing the puck to his backhand - much like Correale had on the prior UNH goal. ~ The Thrush goal chased starting UNO goalie Ryan Massa.
3rd Period
16:10 - Archibald Makes It Interesting - UNH 5, UNO 3 ~ UNO pulled to within two goals on Josh Archibald's second goal of the night. ~ The UNO scoring play began with a favorable bounce. Matias Cleland released a slap shot from the top of the faceoff circle. It was blocked and the puck squirted out to the neutral zone. ~ Archibald gathered the puck and got ahead of a back-checking Grayson Downing.2:06 - Kevin Goumas Gets the Empty Net Goal - UNH 6, UNO 3 ~ UNO pulled their goalie with just over two minutes left in regulation. . ~ Casey DeSmith made his 21st save of the night a good one. He sticked the puck to an empty area of the ice to his right. ~ Matt Willows collected the loose puck, passed it to Nick Sorkin, and he sent Goumas in on his own. ~ It was Goumas' 8th goal of the season.
With the victory, UNH improved it's overall record to 11-10-1. Nebraska-Omaha is now 8-8-1. The two teams face off again Saturday night at 7:00 at the Whittemore Center.
