Player of the Month - Warren Foegele
Over the past month, 17-year-old Warren Foegele (DOB: 4/1/1996) and his St. Andrew's College teammates have made the 600 mile, 10-hour journey from Aurora, Ontario to New England to play in two NE Prep Hockey Showcases. Each time, both Foegele - a 2015 UNH recruit - and the Saints let the US junior hockey world know that some prep schools north of the border can really play.At the Belmont Hill's Jamboree on November 29-30, St. Andrew's defeated the host team 6-2, the Winchendon School 7-4, and Governor's Academy 7-0. The 6'1", 182 lbs., Foegele (Pronounced Foe-gull), a senior alternate captain for the Saints, posted 6 goals (including the game-winner against Belmont Hill) and 6 assists.
The U.S. Hockey Report covered the Belmont Hill's Jamboree and provided this analysis of Foegele's performance (the USHR article also appeared on the St. Andrew's website):
"For St. Andrew’s, Foegele, who is almost certain to hear his name called at the NHL draft next June, was a constant force in all three zones, and very strong on the puck. He’s a determined, hungry player who plays through guys, protects the puck well, and has a skill level that it is equal to his compete level."The USHR appraisal of Foegele was noteworthy in it's prediction that he "almost certainly" would be drafted by an NHL team next June in the 2014 Entry Draft. To date, neither the NHL Central Scouting Service's Preliminary 2014 North American Ones to Watch (Sept, 2013) or Preliminary 2014 November Players to Watch lists have included Warren Foegele.
On the balmy, Saturday before Christmas, I made the trek down to the St. Sebastian's Hockey Tournament in Needham, MA to watch St. Andrew's face off against the Northwood School (Lake Placid, NY). Several NHL scouts and some college hockey coaches were in attendance. Warren Foegele did not disappoint.
As the SAC hockey website reported, the night before, Foegele drew a penalty in the overtime period against Thayer Academy by "splitting the defense and driving to the net". He went on to score the game-winner as St. Andrew's downed Thayer 2-1.
In the semi-final game against Northwood, St. Andrew's fell behind 2-0 in the first period. Each game consisted of two, 25-minute periods. In this video sequence, St. Andrew's is on the power play and the left-shot Foegele (#3) is positioned on the half-boards to the left of the Northwood goalie. Note Foegele's accurate passing, maneuvering in tight spaces, and quick-release shots:
With Northwood ahead 3-1 late in the first period, St. Andrew's went on another power play. Foegele received a pass in the high slot and ripped a wrist shot under the Northwood goalie's glove.
Northwood went ahead 4-3 nine minutes into the second, and final, period and kept St. Andrew's at bay for most of the remainder of regulation. With less than 2 minutes left, Northwood went on a power play. In a scoring sequence so improbable I didn't have my iphone at the ready, Foegele gathered the puck in his own end and carried it down the middle of the ice. Surrounded by three Northwood players, Foegele deked in neutral ice creating some space. As he crossed the Northwood blueline, he snapped a wrister low to the ice and into the back of the net.
Neither team scored in the 5-minute overtime setting up a shootout. The first two shooters on each team didn't score and the third Northwood shooter also came up short. The stage was set for Warren Foegele to win another game for St. Andrew's. His game-winning, shootout goal speaks for itself:
In the championship game, St. Andrew's easily downed St. Sebastian's 5-1. UNH hockey fans interested in watching Warren Foegele play will have an oppportunity on January 3rd and 4th at the USPHL Winter Showcase to be held at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough, MA. One final note on Foegele - on December 17th, the Penticton Vees of the BCHL announced that he will be playing for the Vees next season. Warren is on track to enroll at UNH in the Fall of 2015.
Player of the Week - Ara Nazarian
Another 17-year-old UNH recruit is off to a lightening fast start this season. Ara Nazarian (DOB: 6/19/1996), a junior at Malden Catholic High School, and his Lancer teammates are the defending Massachusetts Super 8 Champions. In fact, they are gunning for their 4th title in a row.Malden Catholic has won their first four games and the 5'10", 170 lbs, Nazarian is the team's leading scorer with 6 goals and 8 assists. Last weekend, the Lancers won the Second Annual Chris Serino Christmas Classic with a 6-2 win over Hingham High School on Friday and a 4-1 victory over Austin Prep on Saturday. The tournament honors the late Chris Serino, the long-time coach at Malden Catholic, former Head Coach at Merrimack College, and Assistant Coach at UNH.
In the opening game against Hingham, Nazarian figured in all 6 Malden Catholic goals scoring three and assisting on the other three. Here's the post-game interview with Ara courtesy of ESPNBoston.com:
Saturday's Championship Game featured the #1 ranked Austin Prep Cougars against #2 ranked Malden Catholic. Nazarian scored the game-winning goal and assisted on two others. He was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
Last spring, Nazarian was selected by the Des Moines Buccaneers in the USHL Futures Draft. In an interview with the blog last April when he committed to UNH, Nazarian indicated that he would decide at the end of this season where he would play in the 2014-15 season.

The statistics for the recruits, presented in the table, are categorized by the year the player and UNH coaches have targeted for enrollment in UNH. For example, the "2014 Recruits" have a target of the Fall of 2014 to begin playing for UNH.

News & Notes
United States Hockey League:~ 2014 UNH recruit Dylan Chanter has decided to not return to the Dubuque Fighting Saints. According to the Dubuque Telegraph Herald, Chanter "wants to play closer to home in the BCHL". Look for an announcement soon regarding where Chanter will play out this season. He has signed a National Letter of Intent to enroll at UNH in the Fall of 2014.
~ 2014 UNH recruit Jason Salvaggio and the Indiana Ice are currently at the top of the Eastern Conference of the USHL. In a 5-4 victory over the Youngstown Phantoms last Saturday, Salvaggio scored 2 goals including the game-winner. He is now tied for 2nd in scoring on the Indiana squad.
British Columbia Hockey League:
~ 2014 UNH Recruit Cameron Marks of the Coquitlam Express posted 3 assists in two games last week. In a 6-5 overtime win over the Langley Rivermen on Saturday, the defenseman assisted on the game-winning goal.
Team USA:
~ 2015 UNH recruit Joseph Masonius was named to the U.S. National Under-17 Team. They are competing in the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Nova Scotia and have won their first 3 games.
