The Little Things

Tonight is a night to focus on the little things.

For our UNH Men's Hockey Team it will mean doing the little things right. If they do what they know to be right, what they've been coached to do, everything will turn out alright tonight.

For me, The UNH Men's Hockey Blogger Guy, it means putting down the pen tonight to be there for my brother and my friend who have lost their jobs these uncertain economic times.

So tonight, I will have to break my promise to be here for my loyal readers. But, I won't be absent from Wildcat Nation. I will join the many who will make their way to Durham tonight to support the team we love so well. I'll be picking up the tab for a couple of great people who I know would do the same for me and I hope to give us a night to enjoy our shared humanity.

All my best, Nation.

Go 'Cats!

What the heck happened last night, Sioux fans are counting on UNH to put B.C. to bed for the season so we don't have to play the Eagles again. :)

Thats cool hockey blogger...I often do the same thing. I too am seeing the effects of this economy..it is bad, read bad. But so is UNH hockey. This is a bad night for UNH Hockey...I think it's a real low point. 2nd night in a row I spend $23 to watch an underachieving team. There is nothing positive to pull out of this weekend. The coaching, the players performance, the attendance....all sucked. I think we all need an adjustment & our standards should be higher than what this organization delivered this year. "Hockey Town USA, rich history, Wildcat nation, Olympic Ice, highest paid coach", blah blah blah,,,thats all crap without actually getting it done....give me a break, UMASS Lowell will be playing next weekend in Boston & UNH won't. There are no excuses for this season. No heart, inconsistent, soft, flat, etc etc. We have one of the most talented players we've ever had (JVR) & yet for the first time since 2001, no Hockey East Finals. SOme might say that JVR is part of the problem. Bulls#$t. He does it all out there...They can't coach their way or play their way into any advantage. I don't think I saw one, not one good hit in the last two nights. They are not physical, they're sloppy, & no one steps up. Lame...no chemistry at all. I hate to single guys out but Foster is a mess..for a top recruit he makes no difference. Is there any future at goal? Kapsted was awful the last 2 nights...I mean awful. From what I can tell, there isn't much on the horizon for recruits either, this team is small, I assume JVR will leave......I don't see UNH getting any better next year. Does anyone else see a drop off in the quality of the club that we're putting together? $23 per ticket & pathetic crowds. Please cheer me up UNH Hockey Blogger cause I liken UNH Hockey right now to the stock market (at a low point with a long recovery ahead). What I really hope is that something clicks & these guys wake up for the NCAA Regionals in Manchester - for what it's worth boys - there are many of us who had the afternoon off to go to Boston next Friday to support you (& hit a couple pubs)...who instead will be helping mom with the kids. Can you play for real in Manchester? Can you win a tournament game for New Hampshire?..for any of us who are still attending games or paying for our unemployed friends to attend? thanks in advance

I think we all just need to remember that this is a game. Yes, it's about skill and it's about playing your best hockey every night and putting it all on the line. Last night, the puck didn't bounce the way we, as fans, or even the way our boys wanted it to. But we have to look at what these boys did this season. Maybe it wasn't the season we were all hoping for and, yes, we would all love to be able to watch them play in Boston next weekend, but these boys still accomplished something this season. We lost some of our best players after last season. This team battled back from a sobering November to take third in Hockey East. If I remember correctly, back in November, it was a huge question of whether we could even make home ice. These boys have battled back to show us all that they do still have what it takes. Sometimes it just doesn't go their way. To say that there is a lack of heart on this team is to be surely blind. Those boys put it all on the line last night. We held BC to one goal and kept Bradford from getting any points. That's huge. We also can't single out players for what happened. It takes an entire team to win a hockey game. Singling out Brian for being a mess completely ignores the fact that with a strong defense, the puck shouldn't even be getting to his pads in the first place. And I don't know what game you were watching because I don't think I have ever seen Kapstad play as hard as he did last night. He and Kessel were on the ice more than anyone. He is an extremely physical player who isn't afraid to throw himself on the line to prevent the other team from scoring. As much as we all want it to be, UNH can't always be on top. Despite that, we have a strong program, strong players, and a strong coaching staff (who by the way, cannot control what happens on the ice every night. They can provide the team with the right tools, but if the boys don't use them to their advantage, it's not their fault). There will be other games; hopefully this season, but if not, then next season. The thing we need to remember is that those boys wanted it even more than we did. You could see it on their faces last night during the skate around. They were heartbroken and, to me, that shows how much heart this team really has.
