In their first action at the 2009 World Junior Championship the United States defeated Latvia 13-2. The onslaught was started by none-other than UNH's own, James van Riemsdyk who tipped home a shot at about six and a half minutes in. He would add an assist in the first as well thereby figuring in half of the goals scored in the period in which they out-shot the opposition 25-5. He would add a third period goal to finish off his scoring - the tenth of the game for Team USA.
Blake Kessel couldn't get in on the scoring unfortunately though he appears on the scoresheet for a boarding call halfway through the first.
They'll be in action again tomorrow night facing a much tougher opponent in Russia. In the mean time be sure to watch this USA Hockey video wishing us a Merry Christmas with some truly insane goals by one James van Riemsdyk - Merry Christmas. You can also see James is near to putting his name into several recordbook columns in this USA Hockey World Juniors Blog entry.
Oh, I almost missed some video of the USA/Latvia game.
Go USA!
Go 'Cats!
