Wednesday's Wildcat Alumni Weekly

Real quick tonight.

Ty Conklin will tend the pipes in his third Winter Classic game in what NHL.com is referring to as the 'Outdoor Hat Trick'. The Red Wings rallied around the Wildcat Alum to blank the very same foe they will face upon Wrigley Field tomorrow, 4-0. Tune in at 1pm eastern on your local NBC station.

While a Minnesota alum, Boston Bruins' center Phil Kessel, older brother of our very own Blake Kessel who recorded his first point in the WJC during the 12-0 US victory over Kazakhstan, scored again tonight giving him 17 goals and 15 assists in his last 26 games including an 18 game point streak and only four pointless games during the stretch. Helping the B's to an incredible 9 game winning streak and 28-5-4 record with league leading totals in goals for (137) and goals against (82).

Go B's!

Back to the 'Cats.

Trevor Smith has been called up by the New York Islanders and played in his first NHL game earning the Third Star of the game though he finished a -1 with three shots - I'll be attempting to track down the back-story on this one. So, I looked a little and this is what I found quickly: Trevor had a couple good chances in close and a couple blocked shots. Cruise through this photo gallery to see if you can spot Trevor.

Garrett Stafford returned to action and Darren Haydar had a goal as their Grand Rapids Griffins sunk (I bet this has been used a hundred times if it has been used once!) the Peoria Rivermen with Maine alum Ben Bishop in net, 3-1. That was last night. Tonight the Griffins butchered (alright, really, I'll stop) the Iowa Chops who feature Wildcat Alum Eric Boguniecki, 6-0. Ironically enough it is Bishop's Maine predecessor Jimmy Howard who got the start and the shutout. Stafford had an assist and was a +2.

Jason Krog picked up one assist Tuesday night and two tonight as his Manitoba Moose split a two game series with the Chicago Wolves.

In the ECHL Colin Hemingway continues to be at the top of the league in scoring with 41 points in 30 games. And Chris Murray was briefly called up to the AHL's Hartford Wolfpack before returning to the Charlotte Checkers.

That's all for this week, Nation. As always be sure to comment if you think there is anything I missed.

Happy New Year!

Go 'Cats!
